What Happened
A homeowner in Co Louth discovered a strong smell of oil coming from their garden. Upon investigation, they found that their home heating oil tank had developed a slow leak at its fittings, allowing oil to seep into the surrounding soil. The homeowner contacted us after noticing dying plants and an oily residue on the ground. Gaea – Oil Spill Experts have carried out a large number of Oil Spill clean-ups in Co Louth over the years.

Investigation
Our team conducted a site assessment, using soil vapour probes and hand augers to determine the extent of contamination. It was found that oil had penetrated approximately 1 meter deep, spreading laterally towards a nearby drainage system.
Our investigation also included a substantial desktop assessment of the area. Things we look for are:

what we found
- Oil contamination extended across an area of 5 square meters.
- Groundwater risk was minimal but required monitoring.
- Some vegetation and topsoil were significantly affected.
- The oil tank base was uneven, contributing to stress fractures in the tank.
Remedial works
- Excavated contaminated soil and safely disposed of it.
- Installed an oil absorbent membrane to prevent further spread.
- Introduced Chemical Oxidants to break down remaining oil residues.
- Stabilized and reinforced the oil tank base to prevent future leaks.
Validation
- Post Oil Spill Clean-up soil testing confirmed oil levels were below environmental thresholds.
- Drainage inspection showed no further risk to watercourses.
- The homeowner was provided with a contamination report for insurance purposes.
